Burnley, LancashireAbout Burnley Youth Theatre
Burnley Youth Theatre is a place where you can belong. Our theatre is a hub of creativity for everyone to experience whether you’re here to; see our latest show; take part in a workshop or event; develop your skills as an artist or to immerse yourself in our volunteer programme.
We are a national leader in youth theatre provision and outreach work, we are dynamic, inclusive and creative. Our mission is to provide exemplary arts based opportunities which inspire and challenge generation after generation to recognise their talents and aspire to the future.
We work indoors and outdoors, in person and online, at our theatre and other venues up and down the country, in education settings, community centres, libraries, town centres and more. We believe you can create impact through the arts in all settings and are passionate about creating accessible spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Our vision is that all children, young people and their families, regardless of background, are able to create, participate in and watch quality theatre and that through doing so they are able to realise their full potential, developing skills and relationships that enhance their life.
BYT was set up in 1973 and for many years was run by volunteers. In 1978, the organisation moved onto our current site, a former Quarry, and was housed in a blue wooden building known as the Quarry Theatre. We became a charity in 1996 and got our first paid Artistic Director in 1997. In 2005, after 10 years of fundraising, the current Burnley Youth Theatre building was opened. It was the first purpose built youth theatre in the UK. In 2013, the original Quarry Theatre was demolished and a new 2 studio building was built. The Moira Preston building, named after a dedicated and long standing volunteer, was opened in March 2014.
We have been established for over 50 years!
50 years since Burnley Youth Theatre opened its doors. From curtain calls and royal visits to fires and floods, BYT has seen it all and has always come back bigger and better.
Workshops for all ages and abilities!
We offer workshops from ages 0-18 and adults with disabilities! From performing, to behind the scenes and tech, BYT can offer something to everyone wanting to get involved in theatre!
