Attraction Information
Monkland Cheese Dairy is a working dairy that produces local cheese from the simplest of food sources, milk. Cheese has been produced for hundreds of years, and a guided tour around the dairy allow you and the kids to discover exactly how it is done.
The tour provides a simple explanation of the general cheese making process as you make your way through the dairy, including the “splat test', which they may let the kids try for themselves! You will then be shown the maturing rooms, and given a chance to taste the cheese. The tours only last about half an hour and are available on most days so there is no need to book.
A Cheese Experience Day offers a more hands on lesson about how cheese is made, through a practical cheese making day, where you can learn about every stage of the process from an Artisan Cheese maker. You get to make your own small cheese, which the dairy will mature for you and then send to you once it is ready!
The dairy offers a great opportunity for the kids to learn more about where their food comes from and how it is produced.
