The enthusiastic visitor centre here really brings Stafford Castle to life! The interior is designed to encourage a 'hands-on' approach to history; the emphasis is most definitely on information with fun and exploration thrown in! Interactive elements include coin minting, brass rubbing and getting to grips with arms, armour and period dress up.
You can patrol over 26 acres in knightly (or queenly!) fashion and visit the keep, inner bailey, outer bailey, atmospheric woodland and fragrant herb garden plus of course the visitor centre with car park. The herb garden has a handy guide as to what the various plants were used for back in the day which is pretty interesting.
A curious collection of artefacts from archaeological excavations is on display and guides are pleased to answer your questions on the castle and its site. There's an audio-visual area with film narrated by Robert Hardy explaining the history of the castle. The layout is in the style of a Norman guardhouse and a scale model of the motte and bailey castle shows what it is likely to have looked like in 1100 AD so it's brilliant for some extra credit school work if you happen to be doing castly things there!
An exciting events schedule spread throughout the year includes the annual Stafford Festival Shakespeare production during summer, school and group tours and occasional themed tours, talks and workshops which are well worth watching out for. And the Castle Shop has a wide range of souvenirs to suit all pockets. It features a range of castle themed children's books and toys and well as being your warm weather stop for ice creams and soft drinks.
