Care to venture into the past? If your kids love dramatic adventure stories then Boscobel House is the place to visit. Take a journey into the 17th century, when concealed priest holes were a deadly feature of ancient manors, Catholic history was chaotic and Charles II reigned as the 'Merry Monarch'.
The 17th century was an intriguing and scary time in Britain, which you will learn on arrival at Boscobel House. This beautifully preserved historic house is a picturesque timber-framed hunting lodge, that is now run by English Heritage. Thousands of families flock to visit this intriguing house every year to uncover it's hidden history...
Boscobel House's History & Charles II
This Grade II* listed building stands in the parish of Boscobel in Shropshire. It has been, at various times, a farmhouse, a hunting lodge, and a holiday home; but it is most famous for its role in the escape of Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651.
Peep into the priest hole Charles II hid in and plotted his next move during the civil war of 1651 after his defeat. Discover stories of his visit and take a short stroll away to visit the descendant of the oak tree in which Charles II famously hid for a day while Cromwell’s soldiers searched for him below. FUN FACT: The Royal Oak is celebrated to this day with over 500 pubs called The Royal Oak after Charles II’s encounter.
17th-Century Garden, Grass Mazes & 16th Century Farm
Boscobel’s Garden is typical 17th-century garden, complete with characteristic box hedging and plants such as peonies and artemisias, commonly found in parterre gardens at the time. Walk up the small mound with your little ones, to the top of what was called a “pretty arbour”, where Charles is said to have spent a few hours reading in 1651.
Not too far away is the more modern addition to garden, the grass maze! Explore 28 metre-long willow tunnel which snakes through a field next to the garden. Planted in 2020, with the help of volunteers, the willow tunnel is a brilliant place for young visitors to play. There's always time to burn off some physical energy after using your ear-power after a day of storytelling!
Why not take leisurely stroll over the farmyard too? Spot chickens and walk round the authentic 16th century farm Charles II would have walked around - while he wasn't out being chased by Oliver Cromwell that is!
Play Area and Trail
Remember those pesky priest holes we spoke about earlier? In a light-hearted play of history, Boscobel House is continuing the 'hide and seek theme'... Children will feel the nerve-fraying thrills of hiding in replica priest holes! After a day of learning, let off some steam exploring the climbing frame, slide and swing.
Ideally located next to the cafe, parents can enjoy a hot drink and cake while their children play. Plus, don't miss the interactive play trail which takes you around the house and grounds.
Food & Drink
Don’t forget to visit our tearoom situated in the former stables. It offers a delicious selection of cakes and light lunches, made from seasonal ingredients and sourced from local suppliers.
Look out for specials on the menu featuring fresh ingredients from Boscobel's kitchen garden.
