RSPB Newport Wetlands
Newport, Monmouthshire and GwentAbout RSPB Newport Wetlands
Nestling between the Severn Estuary and the River Usk on the beautiful South Wales coast, Newport Wetlands is a vibrant, exciting place for people and wildlife.
Our favourite times of the year are: Easter, where were run our brilliant Gwen Goose egg trail and pond dipping kicks off the season! Summer time is fantastic to explore the world of creatures great and small with bees buzzing, dragonflies darting and butterflies bouncy about flowers. Our Discovery Zone is a brilliant place to let the kids run wild and use their imagination to sore. Our natural play structures and bouncy bridge are a huge hit! The most magical time is the winter where Starlings murmurate and leave your jaw dropping! Some have even brought a tear, they are truly exceptional and an absolute must see!
Newport Wetlands is a blend of wetlands, reedbeds and estuary habitats, including the thick, squelchy mud that waders and wildfowl love to forage in. Look among the reedbeds for rare and elusive Bitterns, or look skyward for Swallows and Swifts through the summer. Warm days bring out dragonflies, bumblebees and Grass Snakes, and we also often see Weasels and Stoats. As dusk falls, watch thousands of Starlings take to the sky for their beautiful winter murmurations.
There are four trails at Newport Wetlands. All the coloured trails are suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. To avoid disturbing wildlife, all dogs must be kept on leads and stay on the permissive paths. Trails can get muddy, so suitable footwear is recommended. Sculpture trail - A mile-long (1.6 km) stroll through the reedbeds, over the floating bridge, past a selection of sculptures and the 120-year-old lighthouse Orchid trail - A short walk (1 mile, 1.6 km) In late spring and early summer, look out for different types of orchids. Ideal for wheelchair users Woodland and estuary trail - 1.5 miles (2.3 km) route Wander through ever-changing surroundings – reedbeds, woodland, past open water and the estuary The wetlands experience - Our longest trail at 3 miles (4.5 km) Combines the orchid trail, the woodland and estuary trail and part of the Wales Coast Path.
