This historic hill, crowned with a distinctive tower at its summit, is not just a treat for the eyes but a haven for families seeking a blend of adventure, education, and relaxation.
A Step Back in Time
Rivington Pike’s rich history dates back hundreds of years, making it a fascinating educational journey for both parents and kids! Did you know it's deemed one of the best viewpoints in North West England?
The Rivington Pike Tower, a prominent feature at the summit, was built in 1733 and stands as a testament to the area's historical significance. As families walk up the hill, they can immerse themselves in the stories of the past, sparking your little ones' imagination and curiosity about history and nature.
Nature’s Classroom
The area surrounding Rivington Pike is a thriving natural ecosystem, perfect for young explorers!
The diversity of flora and fauna here offers an excellent opportunity for kids to learn about the environment and the importance of conservation. Parents can turn the hike into a fun, educational experience by identifying different plant species, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the fresh, clean air of the countryside.
You can also explore Rivington Terraced Gardens, a landscaped woodland on the hillside of Rivington Pike! From ethereal lakes and wandering paths to fascinating structures, there's plenty to discover at Rivington Gardens.
Trails for All
One of the best parts of visiting Rivington Pike? The hikes you and the family can venture on!
The best place to begin is the Rivington Hall Barn. From there it’s only 3 miles to the top, but the ascent is rather steep, so don’t hesitate to take a breather and soak in the scenery.
You’ve got a choice of routes but the top family favourite is the path leading through the beautiful Rivington Terraced Gardens. With various trails ranging from easy to moderate, families can choose a path that best suits their fitness levels and interests. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll around the Lower Rivington Reservoir or a more challenging hike up to the Pike, there’s something for everyone.
We suggest heading out on the Rivington Pike Walk, which is one of the best walks in Pennine Moors! Plus, it's a popular route, so you know it'll blow your socks off - think of all the natural scenery and spectacular views you can observe at the hill summit.
The well-maintained trails are safe for children and allow for stroller access in certain areas, ensuring even the youngest family members can join in!
If you fancy something a bit harder, you can explore a more challenging route that is filled with a mix of terrains and can take up to 3 hours to complete.
You may get a little tired but the reward waiting at the top is arguably the best views in the North West! On a sunny day, you can see all the way to the Isle of Man and the Lake District! But even when you aren’t so lucky with the weather, you can still see Winter Hill, Macron Stadium and Lever Park.
Adventure Playgrounds
For families with active children, the Rivington area is home to several adventure playgrounds. These safe, well-equipped areas allow children to play, climb, swing, and slide to their heart's content.
Parents can relax knowing the playgrounds are designed with safety in mind, providing a stress-free environment for families.
Photography and Memories
Rivington Pike’s breathtaking scenery provides a perfect backdrop for family photos. From the panoramic views at the summit to the charming woodlands, there are countless opportunities to capture beautiful family snapshots!
These photos can become cherished family keepsakes, reminding you of the day you explored Rivington Pike together.
