Chichester Harbour Conservancy
Chichester, West SussexAbout Chichester Harbour Conservancy
The Chichester Harbour Conservancy is an area rather than an attraction per se, covering a great deal of natural territory with local features and attractions within spitting distance of one another, so to speak: don't try! It's an internationally significant coastal habitat seeing a whopping 52k waterfowl a year, so ideal for your tiny twitchers and the unusual estuarine ecosystems support rare species of plants and amazing quantities of teeny tiny marine life! In fact the mudflats are so rich in existence that a section of it dug out the same size as a small boat could hold 40,000 tiny Laver spire shells, 60,000 Corophium shrimps, 50,000 Baltic Tellin shellfish or up to 500 Ragworms! Go on, freak the kids out! You can catch solar powered catamaran trips here with Solar Heritage, a practically silent jaunt that will get you closer to nature that normal boat tours. They also offer summer trips May through September on their perfectly charming but worryingly named oyster boat The Terror. Fishing and crabbing can be done at Dell Quay, with equipment sometimes available at the Learning Zone building, but best to take your own if you can. You can often see some of the 20 seals which frequent the harbour, so keep 'em peeled! Nearby to that is the Roman Palace, a nice little educational stop. They have several routes mapped out which lend themselves to themed family day trips, well worth looking at during the planning stage of your day trip!
