Centre of the Cell

Centre of the Cell is an online resource, a science and health education centre and outreach project. We run educational sessions in the Centre of the Cell STEM Pod supported by workshops, mentoring and revision programmes, online resources and volunteering opportunities.

Our website was launched in March 2007 and the Centre opened in September 2009.

Our aims:

Stimulate interest and dialogue about biomedical research

Help to improve health and wellbeing in local communities

Raise aspirations, inspire the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals, and widen participation in further education

Foster excellence in public engagement and science education

Dive into science like never before

We share insights into the world of biomedical sciences and the roles of scientists. Suitable for budding scientists aged 7 and upwards, our award-winning STEM Pod can accommodate up to 30 people seated. The experience is supported by our Learning Team and where possible Queen Mary University of London researchers and medical & dental students from the faculty of medicine and dentistry, who are experts in their fields.

Working alongside our researchers, we deliver an introduction to cells, what happens when they go wrong, and the research and opportunities people can have in science. Our games are co-developed with academics, and we illuminate a series of organs that are kindly on loan from the Barts Pathology Museum to show our own biology.
