Things To Do at the Museum of the Home
The Museum of the Home, previously known as the Robert Geffrye Museum, explores how people have lived over the past 400 years.
Fun Fact: The museum building is housed in 18th-century Grade I-listed Almshouses.
The museum offers a unique look into the history of home life, showing how our homes and how we live in them have changed over time. You'll step back in time and see how different generations have decorated their homes, the furniture they used, and their everyday experiences.
You'll find a series of period room displays designed to show what a standard living space would have looked like during various historical eras. It's like walking through time as you make your way through a chronological series of living spaces, with each room telling a story about the people who might have lived there.
Walk through the historical interiors of a Jewish tenement flat from 1913, an Irish couple's house in the 1950s, a British-Vietnamese home in 2024, an 1870s parlous, a 1976 front room, an ex-council home in 2005, and the Innovo Room of the future! You can step inside these spaces and fully immerse yourself in each time period.
The Basement Gallery showcases a wide range of furniture from all types of social and ethnic ranges, complete with real recorded voices! From Caribbean heritage and East Indian to South Asians living in Birmingham.
You'll discover heritage sites, outdoor spaces and contemporary galleries to scenic gardens - all at the Museum of the Home!
There's even an immersive film with an Augmented Reality experience that tells stories of urban living and the natural world.
