Brunel's SS Great Britain
Bristol, Somerset and BristolAbout Brunel's SS Great Britain
The SS Great Britain once took passengers from the docks of Britain to Australia to start their new lives. Now you can see it in its Victorian heyday and even experience life as a passenger! Will you go into first class or end up in steerage, where it's so cramped only one person can get dressed at a time?
Step back in time 170 years ago when the ship was being built. You'll see the lifeboats being readied to be lifted on board and even see Victorian toilets which the dockworkers would have used! The ship rests on a glass sea to keep it away from the saltwater that could eventually destroy the hull, so you can even ‘walk underwater' to see the bottom of the ship.
After that, it's time to board the ship. Stamp your admissions ticket and see if you can discover any interesting facts in the portholes, before heading straight to the dressing-up box. Try on bonnets, frock coats and long Victorian dresses, and pose in front of the ship's backdrop.
You can also try to steer the SS Great Britain, making sure your compass points due west, or become part of the team moving the propeller. Go down to where the animals would have been kept and meet the ship's cow, or take an audio guide and listen to children trying to find the ship's cat.
The SS Great Britain takes you back in time to a time when Britain was exploring the seven seas, and visiting is your chance to see what part you would have played!
