Ashbourne Recreation Ground
Ashbourne, DerbyshireAbout Ashbourne Recreation Ground
Ashbourne Recreation Ground is a great place to go, whether you fancy an active day, a peaceful one, or both! It is open all year and is free to visit so you can fill a day for nothing but the cost of your transport and the picnic!
The recreation ground is used by local bowls, football, cricket and rugby clubs and has a number of pitches to use. There is also a multi use games area for tennis, basketball and 5 a side football, plus cricket pitch, rugby pitch and a junior sized football pitch, which altogether means there is plenty to keep active kids amused,so long as you book ahead and bring the right stuff!
There is a great play area with a good range of equipment, plus interactive splash pads offering loads of play jets and tipping buckets which the kids will love especially in summer! It is a good idea to bring proper swimwear for the splash pad as they will get awfully wet (and happy!) and ideally make it a wetsuit if the weather's not brilliant.
The formal gardens and a Memorial Park are in the centre of the park, offset by the open spaces of Fishpond Meadow, which can be accessed by 2 river bridges. There are plenty of ducks to feed in the river and on the duck pond, plus there is a bandstand where musical events are held throughout the year. This peaceful side of the Rec experience means it's an ideal trip to take nan and granddad along on, too!
