Ardgillan Castle and Park
Balbriggan, County DublinAbout Ardgillan Castle and Park
Ardgillan Castle and Park offers something for everyone in the family to enjoy, with a variety of things to see and do, many of which are free! Daily guided tours of the ‘castle' are available from 11.30am, and give you a chance to learn all the stories and secrets of the building and its inhabitants. The tours are led by experienced guides who will be only too happy to answer any questions the kids may have. You can also book a guided tour of the gardens to help you explore this as fully as possible, as it has many nuances the layperson will miss.
There are also 194 acres of parkland to explore, with a mixture of habitats and wildlife, 3 gardens, and an amazing playground. The formal rose garden is beautiful, and there is also a great walled garden, full of fruit, vegetables and herbs, plus some ornamental sections. It's an idyllic walk through with several strategically placed benches for resting, thus making it an ideal adventure on which to take nan and granddad along with you.
The kids will love the play area, which has over 30 adventurous pieces of play equipment to clamber about on, including safety swings for the little ones, and a large climbing net for older kids up to age 12. Physical play opportunities abound in this area and it's the ideal trade-off for them paying attention in the more educational sections.
There are some great paths to walk or cycle along, plus picnic areas and even some medieval stocks! Put it all together and you've got a grand afternoon's imagining, playing, exercising and learning - only half of which they'll realise doing!
