Cumbrias Museum of Military Life

Cumbria's Museum of Military Life tells our story, Cumbria's County Infantry Regiment and its soldiers past and present!

Telling the intertwined history of 300 years of British Infantry Regiments through state of the art audio/visual displays and dioramas including a First World War trench. Find out what life was like for ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Get closer to history, with a great variety of items including uniforms, medals, weapons and silver from 1702 to the present day.

See the bible that stopped the bullet, drums once touched by Napoleon and military hardware that served the British Army through the two world wars and beyond.

Education and Events: every year, we open our doors to school pupils of all ages – and bring history to life with the help of our amazing collections. Our programme of talks, information and handling sessions are available to schools and organisations covering a large variety of subjects including the World Wars.

We have a range of interesting collections that comprise of uniform, textiles, weapons, equipment, silver, medals, musical instruments, paintings, prints, drawings, personal items, memorabilia and campaign relics. The archives include a wide range of original documents from unit war diaries to personal papers, casualty records, photographs and books. Many of the items and documents have strong personal and local links.

Throughout the year we hold special events and temporary exhibitions relating to specific subjects or periods of conflict. Please see our website for the most up to date programme of events and activities.
