About Conwy Castle
Looking for a day out that'll capture your kids' imaginations and get the whole family exploring? Conwy Castle (Castell Conwy in Welsh) is the perfect mix of history, adventure and breathtaking scenery - all rolled into one unforgettable experience.
It's known to be one of Europe's finest examples of late 13th-century and early 14th-century military architecture!
Things To Do At Conwy Castle
If your little ones love knights, dragons and tales of old, Conwy Castle in North Wales is the place to fire up their imaginations. This mighty medieval fortress, built by King Edward I and Master James of St George in the 13th century, is one of the best-preserved castles in the UK - and its rich history is bursting with stories just waiting to be discovered.
The Castle Features
The adventure begins in the mighty fortress when you walk across the drawbridge. Kids will love exploring the winding spiral staircases and royal apartments, climbing the tall towers and walking the battlements like brave castle guards past the town walls. The two sets of apartments were then discovered to be a single set of rooms that included a royal chamber, inner chamber and outer chamber.
The high curtain wall and eight huge round and lofty towers give the magnificent castle (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) an intimidating presence. The South-West Tower is said to have been used by the castle garrison and may have had a bakehouse tower, too! Other mighty towers included a private royal chapel, a kitchen tower, the great hall and the top of the cellars. A range of buildings in the medieval caste are now exposed due to degradation. But you can still spot one of their surviving stone arches from the 1340s!
Stunning battlement views look across mountains and the sea and down to the castle's 125ft Great Hall, and it is from these battlements that you and your family can best appreciate Conwy Castle's other great glory: its complete circuit that is over 3 quarters of a mile long and guarded by a whopping 22 towers, acknowledged as one of the finest in the World!
The Castle Gardens
Throughout the 14th to the 17th century, the famous fortress had beautiful castle gardens full of life. With 14th-century vines and 16th-century crab-apple trees, down to the 17th-century ornamental flowers! Sadly, since the 20th century, they have been neglected and were last used in the 1920s.
If your kids love to be free, there's loads of room outside to run about and let out the fizz and imagination they've built exploring this gorgeous ruin. Also, it's well worth noting that Conwy railway station is right next door to the castle, so you can leave the motor at home and have an even larger adventure with a little jaunt on the railway there and back. Add a picnic in the amazing views, and we're talking about a heck of a day for munchkins: fun, educational, and adventurous!
Inside are huge halls and hidden chambers that will spark plenty of "wow!" moments. Younger children can pretend they're royalty in the Great Hall, while older ones will be fascinated by the history and tales of sieges and secret escapes.
What makes Conwy Castle even more special is the town itself – a charming walled town full of independent shops, cosy cafés and even the Smallest House in Britain! It's easy to turn your castle visit into a full day of fun.
Why We Think Families Will Love Conwy Castle
Whether you're raising a budding historian or just looking for an epic day out where the kids can run wild (and learn a little something, too), Conwy Castle ticks all the boxes. It's educational and exciting – and let's face it, who doesn't want to storm a castle for the day?
Top tip: Bring a picnic and enjoy it with castle views – or grab fish and chips by the harbour for the perfect finish to a legendary family adventure.
A Fortress Fit for a King
Built by Edward I in the late 13th century, Conwy Castle was part of his grand plan to conquer Wales. This mighty stone fortress isn’t just historically impressive - it’s considered one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, with eight massive towers that still stand tall!

Walking through Conwy Castle feels like stepping into a fantasy movie set - narrow spiral staircases, secret passages, and breathtaking views over the Conwy estuary. Whether you're a history buff or a daydreaming adventurer, this place sparks the imagination.
A Castle With Stories to Tell
From royal sieges and rebellions to ghostly legends whispered through time, Conwy Castle is packed with tales. And with regular reenactments, festivals, and tours, the castle keeps history alive in the most exciting way possible.
