Chenies Manor
Chenies, BuckinghamshireAbout Chenies Manor
Chenies Manor is a very grand visit for small folk, so we're advocating it for less boisterous children! If the kids can keep their cool though they're in for an imaginative treat as they explore a luxurious Tudor Manor House and it's posh gardens. A nice one to take grandparents on too!
Their delightful gardens are divided into a series of compartments, with various colour themes and structural forms, combining imaginative plantings and beautiful plant associations. Happily these have full wheelchair access, though the gravel pathways may take a bit of oomph. Within the gardens are a couple of small themed mazes which are ideal for children.
In the middle of the main house there is an unusual spiral staircase where the handrail has actually been carved into the brickwork. Around this area, footsteps are supposedly still heard some nights confidently crossing the gallery, possibly those of Henry VIII! You can take a house tour and find out all about the manor's historical connections and stories. The main house unfortunately does not have any wheelchair access.
Immediately outside the gates is the church of St Michael, together with the private Bedford Chapel, which are a bonus to view for the architecturally interested, plus the manor house's 22 individual cut brick chimneys are very striking too.
There are art exhibitions held in the summer, plus you can buy some of the plants from the gardens in the shop. There is also a tea room and shop so it's a nice comfortable stop with pretty much everything you need to support parents.
