About Brownsea Island

Nestled in the scenic Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island, a National Trust site, offers an idyllic escape for families seeking adventure, wildlife, and a touch of history. With its lush woodlands, vibrant wetlands, and a chance to spot the elusive red squirrel, a day trip here promises not just fun but an enriching experience for both adults and kids!

Plus, it's the perfect family outing during the school holidays when you have a little more time!

Things To Do

Find the island just off of Poole Harbour where you can see all the way across to the Purbeck Hills. The area is full of history, like the hermit who made his home here way back in the Middle Ages. The big name though has to be the beloved Enid Blyton who found inspiration for her kid’s classic, the Whispering Wood right here.

Birthplace of Scouting and home to red squirrels.

Beautiful Brownsea Island is located in Poole Harbour, with spectacular views across to the Purbeck Hills.

Thriving habitats including woodland, heathland and a lagoon create a unique haven for wildlife, such as the rare red squirrel and a wide variety of birds, including kingfishers, terns and wading birds.

Free trails help you explore the island, with a natural play area and fantastic picnic spots, there's an adventure waiting for the whole family.

Whether you're a Scout, a Guide or love to camp, you can pitch a tent or hire one on this island and enjoy a staycation. Or if you prefer a roof over your head, there are two bothies and two holiday cottages available to book.

Discover Red Squirrels

Red squirrels are hard to come by in the UK, but at Brownsea Island you can spot these elusive creatues. Not to mention all the other wildlife that make the island their home, like summer-nesting birds.

Splashing Fun With The Family

Head out onto the waters with your own boat, a kayak or paddleboard. Or hire one from the Watersports Academy down at the campsite. You can enjoy the waters on the South Shore only, as the North Shore is where the birds nest.
