Brownsea Island

Reaching Brownsea Island is an adventure in itself! Who doesn't love a boat ride? A short ferry trip from Poole or Sandbanks gives you and your family a dramatic view of the Dorset coastline and the harbour. The excitement of setting sail to an island adds an element of thrill for the kids right from the start.

Bushcraft taster sessions run every Friday during school holidays, along with a variety of activity trails throughout the May half term, summer holidays and October half term.

Once on the National Trust Brownsea Island, you'll find that the diverse habitats are a paradise for nature enthusiasts of all ages. The peaceful woodland paths and hides provide perfect spots for bird watching, where kids can learn about different species and the importance of conservation. There is a huge collection of birds here to discover, so don't forget to bring your binoculars! Because you'll have the perfect opportunity for bird watching while enjoying the spectacular views. 

That's not all though, you can wander through the heathland and deciduous woodland that has created havens for wildlife. All while you take in the glorious views! You'll find daily tours here, where you can hop on the Squirrel Shuttle mini bus tour and listen to squirrel stories, spot a wide variety of natural habitats and enjoy your island adventure!

There's also a lagoon here which is super important to overwintering and summer-nesting birds! 

Activities for All Ages

Whether your family enjoys leisurely walks or more strenuous hikes, Brownsea Island has trails to suit all fitness levels. The Treasure Island play area is themed around pirates, providing a safe and imaginative space for children to play and interact with others. For older children and teens, guided walks and nature activities help deepen their appreciation of the island's unique ecosystem. There's also the red squirrel-inspired agility course! That has fun-filled activities like balance beams, climbing frames, obstacles, see-saws and even a den-building area!

Be sure to follow one of the many wild and wonderful trails, like the Tracker Pack for an adventurous introduction to orienteering. From here you can delve down into the Smuggler’s Trail and see where the local crooks would hide their loot, or make your wildlings’ day by taking them on the Tree Climbing Trail.

Oh! Did you know you can also stay at the Brownsea Island Campsite? You can enjoy more adventures with family staycations as you explore this beautiful island and habitat for birds. But why camping? Well, that's because it's the birthplace of Scouting! This is where adventure camping became super popular in the world! You can visit the original campsite too!

Food & Drink

Feeling peckish? Well, you won't go home hungry! Visit the Villano Cafe for some light meals, like delicious pasties, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, soups and more. You'll also find freshly baked goodies and cakes, not to mention scones and a range of hot or cold drinks. 

And if you need to cool off, you can get their popular ice cream! 

During certain times of the year, there are also snack vans and kiosks that serve a range of snacks for kids.
