Baulk Wood
Biggleswade, BedfordshireAbout Baulk Wood
Baulk Wood is a beautiful swathe of woodland had a not-so-beautiful start as a rubbish dump in the 1960s but was thankfully restored to an enjoyable public open space during the 1980s and nature has now thoroughly reclaimed it! The woodland is largely coniferous with an interesting mix of other trees, all now maturing into a well-loved local wood. There is an easily accessible path winding through the wood which is suitable for wheel and push chairs.
You will most likely encounter the prevalent Grey Squirrels, outside of winter of course, plus Rabbits live on the site and Foxes regularly visit to hunt them! Both the woodland and the meadowland are visited by speckled wood and large white butterflies and bumble bees and beetles and prolific, so it's a great place for a mini beast safari.
This area is being developed as a demonstration site for natural play, so there are plenty of things for children (and adults!) to play on and with though you won't find anything that'd normally remind you of a playground! There are huge logs to climb on, jump off and hide behind, stepping stones, a peep through post trail and they actively encourage den building with the deadwood and fallen branches! It's all about having fun with the things around you which is as we all know a much richer and more traditional method of play.
Henlow Common and Langford Meadows Local Nature Reserve is situated about 1/4 mile further on to the north, following the A6001 towards Langford and there are also plenty of public footpaths and permissive paths in the area, so whether you want to walk, picnic, play, relax, enjoy the views and the wildlife, Baulk Wood really does have something for everyone and is well worth a visit with kids.
