Attraction Information
Thames Barrier Info and Learning Centre is small but offers some great views, plus there is an exhibition where you can learn all about the Thames Barrier.
The exhibit includes a video detailing the history of the barrier, including how it was designed and built. The documentary is very informative, but also a little dated, added a bit more history to your visit as you explain 80's TV to the kids! There is also a working model of one of the gates, and information about how the barrier works to protect 125 square kilometers of central London from flooding that is caused by tidal surges! There is also an interactive quiz.
A great opportunity to learn about one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world, with main gates that stand as high as a 5 storey building, are as wide as the opening of Tower Bridge, and that weigh 3,300 tonnes each! You will also enjoy some great views of the surrounding area, so make sure you bring your camera.
A variety of guided tours are available if you would like to know more, but these must be booked in advance.
