Attraction Information
The Great Witcombe Roman Villa is set in beautiful countryside and thought to be one of its kind left standing in Britain. These rare remains reach several feet high in a few places and give you a good idea of how large the Villa used to be.
There are brick buildings which protect the historic mosaics, but you should be able to see these if you peep through the window. There are also the remains of a shrine, possibly that of a water sprite, which kids will love! It's a great place to give some secret schooling on the Romans or boost their school work if they're studying the period.
This place will give kids a good sense of history and also a chance to run around. Dogs are welcome too, provided they are on leads so this is a good place to include in a walk through the area. Dog owners are of course expected to clear up any dog mess!
Please bear in mind however that the site is quite steep with unproctected slopes and there are no clear paths once inside it. It's also worth noting that although there is a building here with original mosaics there is no actual access to that building, sadly.
It is also worth noting that the terrain may be difficult for pushchairs or wheelchairs so saddle up the baby backpack or put bigger little legs to the test!
