Corinium Museum
Cirencester, GloucestershireAbout Corinium Museum
Corinium Museum allows the curious family to trace the story of the entire Cotswolds from Prehistory to the late 19th century! There are a number of great interactive and fun hands-on exhibits to help keep the kids excited and interested, plus a wealth of precious artefacts on display and who doesn't love a bit of treasure!?
The museum is the renowned home of the largest known collections of Romano British antiquities sourced from Corinium (now known as Cirencester), which was actually the second largest city in Roman Britain! The fascinating Roman collection is spread over 2 whole floors and includes tombstones, mosaics, sculptures and daily life artefacts, plus cool authentic room and shop reconstructions, so the kids can really go to town on imaging themselves in Roman times!
There's also a dramatic gallery where you can come face to face with the Anglo Saxons via a forensically reconstructed man and child from the period. You can also discover buried treasure, which includes rare gold pendants! The centrepiece is the dignified and non-spooky reconstructed grave of a 6th century Anglo Saxon princess, who has been named nicknamed “Mrs Getty” because of the 500+ treasures buried along with her!
Experience the elegance of Victorian Cirencester, be amazed by Medieval sculpture, admire the work of prehistory metal smiths and much more at this brilliant museum. Great audiovisual screens plus animated and practical games will bring history to life for the whole family!
