Attraction Information
Fermanagh County Museum will tell you the history of Fermanagh, and of Enniskillen Castle, which is where is it located. The castle itself, once a medieval stronghold, is fantastic and has an array of 18th and 19th century barrack buildings for the kids to explore. It also has a 17th century Watergate with distinctive twin turrets, and the Inniskillings Museum is situated in the Castle Keep. Your admission fee covers both museums, which is pretty good value for money!
The castle was built almost 600 years ago, and has a rich history that you can learn about through interactive exhibits, movies, quizzes, stories, and more. Learn about the Maguire chieftains who built the castle, how it became an English garrison in the 17th century, then later served as part of a military barracks.
The museum provides a great opportunity for visitors of all ages to explore the heritage of Fermanagh, through a lively programme of events, so check online before you visit to see what's on. There are also a number of free family worksheets available to download online, including one about Vikings and another about the Stone Age!
Ask about the ‘100 objects' project while you are there, and see if the family can think of anything to nominate. Check online for information about the free admission days that are held during the year.
