Colne Valley Railway
Castle Hedingham, EssexAbout Colne Valley Railway
Bring your family to come and sample the vintage atmosphere and take a charming hour long ride on an award winning period country Colne Valley Railway!
This is a really pretty little line scattered along the route with relocated station buildings, antique signal boxes and handsome bridges, all lovingly restored and rebuilt by enthusiasts. They've got a large and varied collection of operational vintage steam and diesel engines plus carriages and wagons which roundly represent much of their Railway Heritage. It's a nice pace to explore with little chuff lovers but it's also a great trip to bring a grandparent or two along on.
There's also a handmade track of 100 metres with a miniature model railway running around it alongside a tunnel, past stations and over bridges, with a castle and a lake too! It's a lovely little recent addition that the kids will really enjoy: see if they can spot Nessie in the lake!
And in between the 2 they have a 650 metres long 7 and a quarter gauge railway too! Big, medium and small: why not get a photo of the family members in front of each of them to suit their size? Or swap them round for a giggle.
There's a buffet car cafe and a gift shop (of course!) to spend a little time (and money) in too, but if you're watching the pennies take your wells instead and head for the Woodland Walk which is open early May until the end of September but at least a little muddy almost the entire time, so it's not suitable for those in normal shoes or for pushchairs.
