Attraction Information
Nestled in the heart of Hampton, Bushy Park is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by families seeking a delightful day out. This sprawling park, rich in history and natural beauty, offers an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Historical Significance
Bushy Park is steeped in history. From its Tudor origins to its role in World War II, the park is a living history lesson. The educational value for children is immense, making it an enriching experience for the whole family.
Natural Beauty and Wildlife
At the heart of Bushy Park's appeal is its stunning natural scenery. The park boasts a variety of landscapes, from wooded areas to open spaces, perfect for family games and picnics. There are over 1,000 acres of historic parkland filled with a range of habitats, like woodland, wetland, acid grassland and ancient trees! Bushy Park is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. You can spot fish, great spotted woodpeckers, starlings, grey wagtails and so much more wildlife.
Bushy Park is the 2nd largest of the Royal Parks, lying to the north of the beautiful Hampton Court Palace. The park has a distinctly rural character and houses around 320 free-roaming deer, which are delightful to sit and spot though you stand no chance whatsoever of getting up close to one!
At the deer park, you can find Red and Fallow deer so it's a nice chance for some secret schooling to learn the differences (the Fallow fellows have longer tails and come in differing shades) and brush up on your binocular skills! The sight of deer roaming freely is a magical experience for children and adults alike, offering a unique opportunity to connect with nature.
If you like to explore nature, you can find horse chestnut trees, a beautiful 19th century style woodland garden, a collection of pools, basins and even a 19-kilometre canal!
You will also find the well-known Chestnut Avenue, a formal Baroque Upper Lodge Water Gardens and the beautiful Diana Fountain: all fabulous backdrops for some family photos, though it should be noted that playing in the wet elements is not permitted.
Psssttt... DOWTK Top Tip: Make sure to check out the Heron Pond! Not only is it absolutely breathtaking but you might be able to see some herons! They also have model boating on the pond too!
