Bromham Mill
Bedford, BedfordshireAbout Bromham Mill
This atmospheric mill is either a late 18th or early 19th century rebuilding, done in brick, timber and stone on the site of earlier mills. It had 2 waterwheels once however only 1 of them remains and was restored in 1980 and now presents a charmingly old fashioned solo wheeled view,
From the 1930s, due to poor water flow for the operating systems, an oil engine was needed to give power plus electricity supplying the other machinery. Much of the machinery is still visible inside the mill.
They often arrange guided tours, traditional crafts demonstrations and workshops, plus historical baking lessons! These are generally available for groups specifically, so it's well worth organising a couple of other families to come with, so you can access the group options! So be sure to check ahead and plan for any bonus activities you can get in on.
On the outside an eel trap was fitted into the sluice gate which is an interesting thing to examine, and there are often river birds to be seen out here so binoculars won't go amiss. Plus a number of public special events and interesting exhibitions take place here throughout the year including National Apple Day every October (will any doctors go, we wonder?). A cafe within the Mill is open on weekends serving fresh coffee, light bites and homemade cakes so even if you don't take a picnic you won't go short on snackery.
