Canoe Trail is a major provider of outdoor activities and watersports in Bedford less than an hour from London on the train . We offer a wide range of activities including

Tourism hire for canoes, kayaks and SUP’s
We hire canoes, kayaks and SUP’s from multiple locations for simple 1 hour sessions, to half day and full day trips along the river including Bedford’s iconic Victorian Embankment. There are a number of different trip locations to start and finish with out and back as well as A to B trips with a complimentary lift. All details are on our website with all equipment and a briefing provided.
The river is a classic English river with tree lined banks and plenty of wildlife for eye spy and excitement for children and young people. We provide all equipment necessary with buoyancy aids, paddles, map and dry bags with a simple briefing.
Woodland camping with our paddle and camp trips
Canoe Trail has a private riverside campsite with beautiful clearings, open fires and space to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. The site is set in a stunning woodland on the banks of the river. Matchstick wood was voted Top 52 Things to do in the world by Lonely Planet for family activities and Top 3 Destinations by Red Bull Magazine for SUP Adventures.
It is extremely popular with families, friends and groups to enjoy time around campfires away from TV’s, screens and allowing time to unwind and spend quality time together. You can select ‘add on’s ‘ with tip tents, luggage service, firewood and grills to make your trip more manageable. Talk to us about larger family groups with our private bookings.
Kids Birthday Parties
Canoe Trail run a range of birthday parties for children and young people with different themes activities including watersports, SUP safari’s, climbing and bouldering and bushcraft. Each party includes games, challenges and guidance to make it a memorable experience with additional time on site to unwrap gifts, for cake or picnics and to enjoy the surroundings.
Wildlife and History
The River Great Ouse is teeming with wildlife including otters, woodpeckers, kingfisher and herons making it an incredible tree lined waterway to explore as families. The landscape changes from rural fields and open spaces to Bedford’s iconic Victorian Embankment with historic bridges and locks and hidden backwaters such as the Etienne Stott White Water Arena named after our Olympic Gold Medallist. Other interesting locations include the blue plaque showing where John Bunyan, the writer was baptised in the river in 1650.

Coaching and courses for Families and Children
Canoe Trail is a Gold Delivery Partner for Paddle UK offering coaching courses and qualifications including Paddle Sports Instructor, Paddle Sports Safety and Rescue courses and Touring Leader.
We also offer learning to roll(kayak rolling), intro to white water courses and the personal paddling awards, Paddle UK Start, Discover and Explore qualifications.
We hold a large number of quality assurance and safety awards including AALA (Adventure Activities Licencing Authority), Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Mark and Adventure Mark as well as being members of the Institute of Outdoor Learning.
Sport England and Outdoor Industry Association Research showed that young people who are involved in outdoor activities as teenagers will remain involved and active in these pastimes throughout their lives (75% retention rate).

Canoe Trail’s Pedigree
Canoe trail is a family run watersports and adventure company run by professional adventurers Ashley Kenlock and Richard Harpham FRGS, a motivational speaker. Bedford’s human powered adventurers have covered over 15,500 miles of expeditions including sea kayaking Vancouver to Alaska, canoeing the Yukon and cycling the Sahara and producing their guidebook Great British Paddling Adventures.

Family Watersports and Outdoor Activities one hour from London
Canoe Trail offers canoeing, kayaking and SUP hire from 1 hour to full day and overnight trips in Bedford on the River Great Ouse. A multi award winning family run business our staff over the perfect day out to enjoy fresh air miles, relax in the great outdoors and rewild your family. The river offers incredible wildlife, rural countryside as well as delightful cafes and eateries on Bedford's iconic Victorian Embankment.
Our main base at Kempston Outdoor Centre has indoor and outdoor climbing walls, a high ropes course and a wide range of outdoor activities that can be booked for groups, charities and schools. Downstream we have our private woodland and a farm site for Duke of Ediinbugh activities.
Progress your skills further with our intro to white water courses in Bedford learning to canoe and kayak in our private facility with adjustable rapids and waves. Learn skills and drills from our coaches and book sit on tops, double and 3 person canoes, kayaks and SUP's with over 300 craft on site. Our private riverside woodland campsite offers a unique paddle and camp activity with discreet clearings and open camp fires it is an incredible night or two under the stars and tree canopy. Whether a stag, hen or family break the woodland paddle and camp is unique in Britain and feels more like a Canadian wilderness trip without the bears and wolves and in fact you are less than a kilometre walk to a local pub if you chose. The woodland is home to woodpeckers, owls and badgers and the river has otters making this a magical trip for the whole family.
Start from our Bedford locations or Kempston Outdoor to centre to extend your trip or book a longer multi day experience downstream to St Neots. Once hooked then why not book a private family trip to one of our other destinations including River Tweed, Norfolk Broads, Jurassic Coast or even our Yukon Canoe Expedtion.

Canoe Trail is a Paddle UK (National Governing Body) delivery partner offering courses and qualifications for families and young people. Kids love learning new skills and spending time outdoors burning energy and having fun on the water. This can be a quick family activity hiring equipment (canoes, kayaks or SUP's) from an hour, half day through to a full day enjoying a digital detox.
Canoe Trail also run a large number of stuctured courses including SUP fun tasters, intro to kayaking and paddlesport as well as coach led safety courses, white water intro course and Duke of Edinburgh Expedition and other qualifications. We host over 13,500 activity sessions per year with almost half for young people with schools and youth charities we work with.
Young people enjoy spending quality time with their families and friends, tackling new sports, learning and building resilience. With school groups in particular these activities are enriching and help develop broader life skills including team work, leadership and problem solving.
