About Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills
Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills, housed in what was once the largest woollen mill in the world in a beautiful riverside setting, will take you back in time to learn about the industrial history of Leeds, from textiles to printing, clothing to manufacturing, engineering and locomotives, which the city was famous for.
Armley Mills contains exhibits from the 18th century through to the present day, with galleries and collections that tell the story of a number of industries that have shaped the city, from recreated Victorian cottages to the waterwheel. Those with a keen interest in engineering and steam power will love the exhibition of machine tools, large and small engines, and road vehicles galleries. Best of all, is a super collection of locomotives, including the working engine ‘Jack'.
Discover Leeds' connection with the wool and cloth industries, and find out how it was central to the concept of ready made clothing, with a Tailoring gallery, “Behind the Seams' exhibition, and the ‘Unzipped' and Hainsworth galleries. You can also learn about the history of printing in Leeds, and its interesting history with the world of photography and film. Did you know that the first ever moving image in the world was filmed in Leeds?! Armley Mills has one of the smallest working 1920s cinemas in the world, so you can take a seat and enjoy a black and white film during your visit!
