Local History
Discover the industrial history of Caerphilly County Borough at the museum, which is built on the site of The Elliot Colliery, an old colliery in the Rhymney Valley. Explore the original Victorian winding machine or wander around the different galleries and see the latest exhibitions on show, many of which are hands-on activities.
This is a fantastic experience for children to get up close with historical artefacts. There's also an exciting events programme running throughout the year with special activities during school holidays.
Things to do
See the Original Victorian Winding Engine
The Winding House museum has a stunning centrepiece which gives a real insight into the mining history and mining experience of the area. An original Victorian winding engine dating back to 1891 is run for the general public throughout the year. Children will be fascinated to see this historical engine running. Historical activities like the ones available at The Winding House will really bring the past to life for the younger generation.
Interactive Exhibits
Explore the exhibition spaces at The Winding House to discover the wider history of the area including both industrial and family history. The museum has an impressive collection of over 14,000 objects to see. Many of these can be handled and touched by visitors in the West Gallery.
You can also view paintings by local artists in the art gallery and art exhibition areas.
