Soho House
Birmingham, West MidlandsAbout Soho House
Children will be fascinated to see the home of so many ‘firsts'. Soho House, the home of industrialist Matthew Boulton, was the first modern home in Britain to have central heating; he was also an early adopter of the steam-heated bath, which didn't become popular, and the flushing toilet, which did.
Within Soho House there are also displays from the Soho Manufactory, one of the world's first factories, of silver, gold and ormolu, a gold-coloured metal used to make ornaments. Kids will also be fascinated by these items, including the huge gold harp in the sitting room!
If your little one has a vivid imagination, they'll love hearing about the Lunar Society. This club met every month to discuss scientific ideas and the latest advances in technology, but always met on the full moon so they could find their way home by its light. Of course, your child may have a different theory…
Soho House will be particularly enjoyed by children who have inquiring minds, but you might have to answer a few more questions than normal!
