Peel Castle
Peel Castle sits on an islet near the harbour of Peel. Built by William le Scrope in 1392, the castle holds within its walls a wealth of history. Situated on St Patrick's Isle and is believed to be the first place Christianity was brought to the Isle of Man by St Patrick around 1226. The islet site is covered in ruins starting from around 1000 AD. The cathedral of St German took around 200 years to complete and fell into dilapidation soon after the completion of the current St German's on Derby Road in 1884. The curtain wall was completed in the 14th century. At the Entrance, visitors are given a handheld audio phone. This will be their guide around the Isle (around 7 acres). There is no set route, visitors just walk around where they wish. All the buildings and ruins are marked with numbers which can be keyed into the audio phone to hear a minute long explanation. The site is covered in a thick blanket of grass, which is at its best during the spring/summer months. There are no walkways inside the castle walls and viewing the ruins is more of a gentle ramble. Once the inner castle has been visited, do not forget about the path and walkway around the outer wall, which has great views of Peel City and the sea.Opening Times
