Spread across 190 acres of beautiful Hertfordshire parkland, Cassiobury Park is Watford's flagship green space and one of the best free family days out in the Home Counties. A Green Flag Award winner, it packs in two playgrounds, a miniature railway, free seasonal splash pools, two cafés, outdoor gyms, sports pitches, a canal, a bird hide and wide open meadows — all without an entry fee.
Whether you're after a toddler-friendly splash on a hot summer's day, a miniature train ride the kids will talk about for weeks, or simply a long picnic in the sun, Cassiobury Park delivers a genuinely full day out for families of all ages and budgets.
The park borders the Grand Union Canal and the River Gade, offering lovely waterside walks. A bird hide gives wildlife watchers the chance to spot local species in peace. The park also connects to Whippendell Wood, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) that's ideal for longer woodland walks and bluebells in spring.
Designated segregated cycle paths run through the park, making it accessible and safe for family cycling too.
There are two cafés in the park — one at each end — both serving hot and cold food and drinks. In summer, an ice cream van and snack kiosk are also on site. Picnics are very much encouraged, and there is plenty of open space to spread out.
