Tintagel Castle
Tintagel, CornwallAbout Tintagel Castle
With its pretty spectacular location on Cornwall's rugged and windswept Atlantic coastline, Tintagel is a dramatic castle. A beautiful place full of magic and myth where the legend of ancient King Arthur was born!
History
According to legend, Tintagel was the birthplace of King Arthur and it is said that the wizard Merlin lived in a cave beneath the castle. While the historical evidence for this is scant, the legends have made Tintagel Castle one of the most famous and visited medieval castles in England. Plus, also capturing the imagination of writers across the world.
Things to do
The castle itself is a maze of ruins and is built on a rocky outcropping, which gives it amazing views of the sea. Visitors can also explore the remains of the castle's walls and towers via steep steps and a spectacular award-winning footbridge.
This historic spot is also rich in flora and fauna and provides a regular breeding ground for coastal wildlife. A fierce strong hold of the Earls of Cornwall, the castle was built in the 13th century. Now in ruins, it maintains the power to inspire young and old alike. A great place for the kids to practice with their camera or their sketch pad.
There is also a castle beach which is tidal, meaning that twice a day, the sea reveals an intriguing world of rockpools for you and the kids to explore! They will have a fantastic time! There are also proper caves for braver explorers including Merlin's Cave which stretches right back into the cliff when the tide is out!
The 'Beach Cafe' serves a delicious selection of hot and cold snacks and light meals, all sourced from fine local Cornish produce.
Despite its ruined state, Tintagel Castle is a popular tourist destination and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The English Heritage organisation maintains the castle and offers guided tours, which are a great way to learn more about the castle's history and legends.
