Peterhead Prison
Peterhead, AberdeenshireAbout Peterhead Prison
Peterhead Prison Museum offers a truly unique day out in the heart of Aberdeenshire. Set within the walls of the former HM Convict Prison - the only one of its kind in Scotland - this multi-award-winning attraction brings over 125 years of extraordinary history to life in a way that stays with you long after you leave.
Pick up your audio guide on arrival and explore the prison entirely at your own pace. As you walk the galleries and halls, you'll hear first-hand accounts from former officers and inmates, bringing the atmosphere of Scotland's toughest jail vividly to life. The sights, sounds, and even the smells of the prison have been carefully preserved to create a fully immersive experience.
Along the way, discover the fascinating stories that make Peterhead unlike anywhere else in Britain - including the site of the country's first state-owned railway, and the dramatic 1987 siege in which the SAS were deployed on mainland UK soil for the first time to free a hostage prison officer.
Suitable for older children and adults with an interest in history, true crime, and Scottish heritage. The site is wheelchair and pushchair accessible, and a cafe is on site for refreshments after your visit.
