Timespan
Helmsdale, The HighlandsAbout Timespan
Timespan is an award-winning museum with recently refurbished features and an ever changing selection of fascinating multi-media exhibitions. The gallery programming is always suitable for families and while there tend to to be interactive elements the displays are always of a high standard and visually impressive as well as highly educational in potential.
It's also worth noting that if you have family in East Sutherland they offer a Roots Tracing service which you can use with the kids to help draft up your family tree!
It's all fully wheel and push chair accessible and there's a lift to the first-floor gallery.
Outside by the cafe there are herb and geology gardens to explore and admire too! The geology garden is particularly appealing to kids once you've persuaded them not to climb on anything: there are visually impressive examples of a great many local rock specimens beautifully arranged around the garden with informative plaques on hand to tell you all about them. A kids' quiz sheet available to help bring home the educational aspect and help keep the bigger kids entertained.
The community gardens under the Telford Bridge are within sight from the cafe and are worth pointing out to the kids, it's a rather lovely example of productively socialist reclamation!
