The Chocolatarium
Edinburgh, Edinburgh and LothianAbout The Chocolatarium
The Chocolatarium in Edinburgh is a deliciously hands-on chocolate experience where families can discover the story of chocolate, make their own chocolate bar and taste their way through a huge range of flavours.
Hidden just off the Royal Mile, this award-winning chocolate attraction combines a guided tour, a working micro-factory, chocolate-making and plenty of tasting. It is a brilliant indoor activity for families with children aged 6 and over, especially if you are looking for something fun, creative and a little bit different in the heart of Edinburgh.
During the main Tour of Chocolate, expert guides take visitors through the journey from cacao bean to finished chocolate bar. You will learn how chocolate is made, explore different ingredients and flavours, and get stuck into a make-your-own chocolate bar activity to take home.
One of the best parts of the experience is the tasting. Families can enjoy hot chocolate, try single-origin chocolates and choose from around 40 flavours in the tasting room. It is fun, interactive and packed with plenty of chocolatey surprises along the way.
The main chocolate tour lasts around 90 minutes and includes:
- A guided chocolate experience
- A look inside the micro-factory
- The chance to make your own chocolate bar
- Hot chocolate
- Pick-your-own tasting with around 40 flavours
- Single-origin chocolate tastings
- Scottish chocolate tasting
- Access to the chocolate shop
The Chocolatarium also offers other experiences, including truffle-making workshops and chocolate pairing experiences for adults. Some experiences have higher minimum ages, so always check before booking.
Because this is a popular Edinburgh attraction, advance booking is strongly recommended. Walk-ins may sometimes be possible, but tours often sell out, particularly during weekends, school holidays and busy travel periods.
The venue is close to Waverley Train Station and is easy to reach if you are visiting Edinburgh city centre. It is around a 5-minute walk from the south Market Street exit of Waverley Station and sits just off the Royal Mile, making it easy to combine with other nearby family attractions.
Why is it a great family day out?
The Chocolatarium is a great choice for families who want more than a quick museum visit. It is hands-on, guide-led and full of chocolate tasting, so children get to learn, create and eat along the way.
The make-your-own chocolate bar activity is the highlight for many families. Children can choose ingredients, design their bar and take home something they have made themselves. It is a fun way to break up a day of sightseeing in Edinburgh, especially if the weather is not playing ball.
The tour is best suited to children aged 6 and over. Younger children are not permitted on the main Tour of Chocolate, as the experience includes food safety instructions, equipment and sections where visitors need to listen to a guide.

Dietary options are available for many visitors, including vegan, vegetarian, halal, dairy-free and gluten-free diets, but cross-contamination cannot be fully ruled out.
