About St Cecilias Hall Museum of Instruments
St Cecilias Hall Museum of Instruments is part of Edinburgh University's Collection of Historic Musical Instruments (EUCHMI), which is one of the world's most important musical heritage collections! There are kids' trails, tours for all ages and demonstrations of harpsichords. Reid Concert Hall Museum of Instruments also on site.
There are over 5,000 objects in the collection, which contain all the main types of musical sound making devices from the 16th to the 20th century! Families and kids of all ages can learn all about musical instruments and have fun together at the same time. There is an exciting activity trail to follow, plus some great interactive kiosks that allow you to ‘play' historic keyboards, watch how to play the serpent, and listen to sackbuts (a type of trombone). You'll discover things you never knew about musical instruments!
The auditorium at St Cecilia's Hall, is one of the oldest concert halls in Scotland and the second oldest in the whole of Britain!It is currently closed for redevelopment and is due to reopen in 2016. When it does, there will be a display of about 40 of the most important and best preserved keyboard instruments in the world.
There is also the Reid Concert Hall Museum of Instruments to explore, which has almost 1,000 items on display, including woodwind, percussion, stringed, and brass instruments from around the world. This museum has a great Victorian atmosphere and there is plenty to discover, especially if you use the sound guides which contains musicians playing and talking about different instruments.
