Apedale Valley Light Railway
Newcastle under Lyme, StaffordshireAbout Apedale Valley Light Railway
The Apedale Valley Light Railway is a volunteer operated narrow gauge railway. We operate trains on a short ride alongside the Apedale Community Country Park. Our trains are proper narrow gauge ones, which used to work in mines and quarries – big enough to be exciting, but small enough to be kid-sized!
We use both steam and diesel locomotives. Some of the locos are almost 100 years old! The coaches are replicas of those which our ancestors used to travel to work on – so no soft seats, but lots of fresh air! The trains leave from a station which used to stand at Silverdale; in that station, we have a shop with lots to interest kids of all ages.
During the year, we have several special events which are aimed at families – Easter Egg hunts, and (twice a year) the Teddy Bear Outings, when kids with bears can travel free. Don't worry, it doesn't have to be a bear! At Christmas, Santa comes to see us – these trains get very busy, so we operate an advance booking system.
The train is accessible to wheelchair users, as is the shop and the station area. On special event days, other areas of the site are opened to the public. The majority of such areas are accessible.
