National Trust - Basildon Park
Reading, BerkshireAbout National Trust - Basildon Park
Basildon Park is an impressive Georgian mansion and has a lovely surrounding parkland which was rescued from ruin for future posterity by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the 1950s.
Now a fully explorable domain once more, you and the kids can enjoy exploring places like the 1950s Kitchen which often hosts volunteers doing ye olde baking demonstrations! Be sure to ask about the Eye Spy Trail around the house: it's a terrific way of keeping the kids interested and moving along and they regularly change the items hidden about, too, so even if you've done it before it's still loads of fun!
There's also a piano in the hall which visitors are welcome to play (provided you can play, please!) so feel free to tinkle the ivories a little and see if you can make the kids cheer (or cringe) (or both!).
Out in the grounds there are waymarked trails through the historic parkland and gravel paths around the gardens. The Woodland Walk trail features a natural style tunnel, stepping stones and a bridge! Exciting stuff for small folk, plus there are a couple of sets of Giant Drafts and Garden Jenga outside too! A lovely place to relax for a while and take some nice family photos.
And during the school holidays because this place is National Trust run there are loads and loads of great activities, theme days, seasonal special events and all sorts of other goodies help throughout! Generally combining the fun with at least a little education these events are a great way to keep the kids occupied and mentally stimulated while they're away from the beloved school room!
