Allihies Copper Mine Museum tells the story of how life in Allihies was completely changed by the discovery of a rich copper deposit in 1812 and the spread of the Industrial Revolution.
Follow the Copper Mine Trails to see a number of historic sites relating to the copper industry, and enjoy a great hike with the family at the same time! You can get a walking guide from the museum, and the trail is well signposted.Be warned, it can be a bit of a hike, so may not be suitable for the smalls or pushchairs, but there are a number of routes to follow.
The museum is full of interesting information about the workforce at the mine, which only contained 30 employees in 1813, but had increased to 300 within 2 years, and to 1,000 by 1831! Discover the impact of the famine, and the poor living conditions for the labourers and their families. A fascinating historical day that includes a great trail with amazing views of the local area.
