Coalhouse Fort
East Tilbury, EssexAbout Coalhouse Fort
Coalhouse Fort is a historic building and military fort located on the northern bank of the River Thames in East Tilbury, Essex. Built in the 1860s to protect London from the potential threat of invasion, the fort has a rich history and played a significant role in coastal defence during both World Wars. Today, it is open to the public as a museum and heritage site. It offers visitors a glimpse into its past as well as stunning views of the surrounding area which includes a recreational park-perfect for families.
Why we recommend Coalhouse Fort
Interesting History
This artillery Fort is considered to be one of the finest examples of an armoured casemated fort in the UK. This heritage attraction is also said to be haunted with reports of eerie voices and heavy footsteps being heard! A visit to the fort provides an insight into the history of how it was used and how it has evolved over the years in the defence of the approaches to London. The Coalhouse Project have been working to restore the fort so it can be used for heritage and educational purposes. We think kids will be impressed to see the World War 2 gunnery posts, imagining the sound of quick-firing guns from them!
Open days and Guided tours
Currently no areas of the Fort are open to public access or guided tours but this may change as they have run previously. So it is a good idea to check online when you plan your visit to see if one of the regular open days and events are being held throughout the year.
Coalhouse Fort Park
After your visit to see the fort, there is still the parkland for the family to enjoy. Coalhouse Fort Park is a public park which offers wide open spaces, picnic benches, a children's adventure play area, plus riverside walks and nature conservation areas.
