Coalhouse Fort is considered to be one of the finest examples of an armoured casemated fort in the UK and is still undergoing restoration. It's also said to be haunted! A visit to the fort provides an insight into the history of how it was used and how it has evolved over the years in the defence of the approaches to London.
Not all areas of the Fort are open to public access,so it is a good idea to check online when you plan your visit to ensure that you can attend one of the regular open days and events that are held throughout the year. Guided tours are available, which are conducted by a group of volunteers and provide lots of fascinating facts about the history of the fort.
The safe and informative tour of the building will allow you to discover areas that are normally out of bounds to the general public. Highlights include the Magazines (known by most children as dungeons!), and the Roof area, which has some magnificent views over the river. Each tour last approximately 45 to 50 minutes and the cost is included in the entry price.
After your visit to the fort, there is still the parkland for the family to enjoy, which offers wide open spaces, picnic benches, a children's adventure play area, plus riverside walks and nature conservation areas.
