Perched at the top of Main Street in the heart of Inveraray, overlooking Loch Fyne in Argyll, Inveraray Jail is one of the finest preserved courthouse and prison complexes in the world. This award-winning living museum tells the real stories of the men, women, and children - some as young as seven - who were tried and imprisoned here from the early 1800s until the jail closed in 1889.

It's history you can touch, hear, and feel rather than simply read about.

  • Inveraray Jail is open every day, including weekends and bank holidays. Opening hours are 10am to 5pm (last entry 4pm)
  • Winter opening hours differ from summer hours - check the Inveraray Jail website before your visit
  • The jail is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day
  • This is a self-guided experience - there are no fixed time slots. Arrive any time before 4pm
  • Suitable for ages 4 and above
  • Dogs are welcome inside the Jail experience. Please note dogs are not permitted in the Escape Room
  • The audio guide is downloadable to your own device - available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Dutch
  • Limited free parking is available directly in front of the Jail. A large town car park is located nearby
