Edinburgh Castle is set on a steep, historic hill, so expect uneven cobbles, slopes and some steps. Pushchairs are welcome, but a lightweight buggy is easiest to manage and some areas may be difficult to access. Most families spend 2 to 4 hours exploring the main sights, with longer visits possible if you add a guided tour or stop for food. Arrive early during school holidays and weekends for a more relaxed visit.
Join a 90-minute English-language guided tour of Edinburgh Castle, including admission to one of Scotland’s most famous landmarks.
Your experience begins with a short introduction on the Royal Mile before you head to the castle with your guide. Inside, you will explore the castle grounds and hear the stories behind its kings, battles, buildings and spectacular city views.
Your guide will point out highlights including St Margaret’s Chapel, Mons Meg, the Great Hall, the Honours of Scotland and the Dog Cemetery.
Important: Due to Historic Environment Scotland rules, guides cannot accompany groups into covered indoor areas. You can explore those spaces independently after the guided portion of your visit.
