What is the Barbie: The Exhibition?
The Design Museum is set to open an 8-month, all-new exhibition on everyone’s favourite doll – Barbie to celebrate the 65th birthday! You’ll be immersed in the Barbie legacy started by the iconic Ruth Handler. As you deep dive into the story of Barbie and how the cultural icon has developed through history.
From generations of creative decisions on Barbie’s design evolution, to her ever-changing design through fashion. Not to mention the extraordinary life the fresh-faced doll has lived through.
Not only that, but the Design Museum has partnered with the toy company Mattel Inc. to showcase a huge range of eye-catching objects and unique items from the extensive archive of Barbie. From rare collectables, never-before-seen dolls, to Barbie’s clothes and vehicle designs. Of course, you’ll also come across Barbie’s dreamhouse and key pieces that all tell the story of Barbie over the years.
Apparently, this has been 3 years in the making! So we’re really excited to catch the entire exhibition centred around a toy that we once played with.
Not much has been released about the exhibit so far, except two pictures that give you a taste of what’s in store! One item that will be on show is Barbie’s 1962 Dream House – a bright and bold mid-century home with a vintage TV, books, magazines and even a bed. To Barbie’s first-ever 1985 Day to Night version, with her iconic pink power suit that transforms into a brilliant dress for the evening.
All we know is that we’re curious and excited to see whether we’ll get to set our eyes on Barbie dolls old and new.
