Let’s get this show on the road! 2020 is here, and with it come plenty of upcoming movies that will have both you and the kids staring at the screen in awe. Expect star-studded casts and much-awaited bloackbusters. So grab some popcorn, find your seats and get ready to be dazzled by the latest on the silver screen, as we reveal the best new kids’ movies in 2020.

We've even lined up some relevant days out so you can keep the movie magic going. Lights, camera, action!

  1. The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle

    Release date: 7th February 2020

    Starring the charismatic Robert Downey Jr. (and Tom Holland as a voiceover co-star), comes one of the most anticipated kids’ films in 2020 - The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle. In his latest professional venture RDJ takes on the role of the eccentric Dr. Dolittle, who possesses the unusual skill of speaking to animals. The movie follows him on a fantasy adventure through Victorian times that will keep you and your kids glued to the screen. Expect a story that comes much closer to Hugh Lofting’s original books than its most recent predecessor starring Eddie Murphy.

    Film Adventure: Want to feel as close to the animals as Dr. Dolittle? Treat your kids to a special zoo keeper experience - it won’t teach you to speak with beasts but you’ll definitely get a taste of what it’s really like to work with animals.

  2. My Spy
    Release date: 7th February 2020

    Hilarious spy action comedy, starring Dave Bautista and Kristen Schaal, this action-packed family film tells the story of failing CIA agent JJ who is forced to partner up with a smart and absolutely precious 9-year-old girl after she catches him surveying her family. As the unlikely pairing get closer and help each other grow as people, you won’t be able to help but feel happy and excited. It’s one of those easy-going flicks that will have your kids walk out of the cinema feeling ready to save the world from any baddie out there.

  3. Sonic the Hedgehog
    Release date: 14th February 2020

    Finally, after a 3 months' delay of the original release date and a major character redesign, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is expected to arrive in cinemas across the UK on Valentine’s day. Sonic and his new friend, small-town sheriff Tom Wachowski, go face to face with the evil Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey. A little bit of nostalgia, a lot of action and plenty of fun for the kids - sounds like the perfect family film, don’t you think?

    Film Adventure: Feeling inspired to play some old school arcade games? All Hollywood Bowl venues have an arcades entertainment area where you can play classic games powered by SEGA.

  4. Onward
    Release date: 6th March 2020

    Onward is an animated adventure that promises to be full of heart and humour. Watch Tom Holland and Chris Prat pair up to take on the roles of two elf brothers who live in a suburban fantasy world and end up having to dab into the realm of magic and wizardry to bring their late father to life. Knowing that this movie comes from the creators of Toy Story 4, it’s safe to say we’re expecting yet another Pixar masterpiece. It’s one of those kids’ movies that adults fall in love with.

  5. Mulan

    Release date: 27th March 2020 POSTPONED 

    Young Mulan will step up and take her ailing father’s place in the Chinese army to fend off the attack of the vicious huns and bring honour to her family. This spectacular live-action adaptation of Disney’s classic Mulan has a much more serious tone to it and it seems to stay closer to the original poem, the Ballad of Hua Mulan. There will be no Mushu in this one, but there will be a might phoenix guardian spirit, an evil female witch and lots of beautiful sword fighting.

    Film Adventure: If the video montage of “I’ll make a man out of you” in the original Disney animation gets you as hyped as it does us, you should put your skills to the test at the Obstacle Training Ground.

  6. Trolls World Tour

    Release date: 10th April 2020 (Original release date was 17th April 2020)

    Funk, country, techno, classical, pop and rock - the trolls are about to take you on a wild musical spectacular. Poppy and Branch set out to save the music of the six troll tribes from rockers Queen Barb and King Thrash who seek to destroy everything but rock. If trolls, music and an explosion of colours is what you’re looking for in a new kids film, this is the one for you!

  7. The Secret Garden

    Release Date: 17th April 2020

    If you’ve got book lovers at home, this is one of the 2020 new film releases you should definitely be keeping an eye on. A stunning adaptation of the best-selling kids’ novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett, it tells the story of a young orphan girl, who unveils the secret of a mystical garden, hidden in her uncle's estate.

    Film Adventure: One of our favourite attractions for book-loving families is Seven Stories in Newcastle Upon Tyne. It has all the best of British kids’ literature in one single magical place!

  8. Black Widow

    Release Date: 1st May 2020

    Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow was one of the toughest female superheroes on the Avengers Team without actually having any superpowers; she was just that awesome! Which is why it was even harder to accept she was never coming back after the events of Endgame. Don't despair though, Natasha Romanoff is back on the big screen in her very own movie (which predates the events of Endgame) and it looks absolutely epic. Teenage girls, boys and parents alike will be drawn into the fast-paced spy action in the first of Marvel’s new movie releases in 2020.

    Film Adventure: If this move tapped deep into your Marvel feels, then go see your favourite Avengers at Madame Tussauds London or Blackpool. Black Widow unfortunately isn’t there but Hawkeye, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor are.

  9. Scoob!

    Release date: 15th May 2020

    We’ve all seen Scooby Doo and the gang in action in the TV series, now it’s time for the first ever full-length animated feature about the mystery-solving dog and his friends. As the dogpocalypse hangs above the world and the gang tries to prevent an evil plot that threatens to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon us, Scooby uncovers he has an important destiny to fulfill. It’s proper mystery flick with a pinch of nostalgia mixed in.

  10. The Spongebob Movie: Spongebob on the Run

    Release date: 22nd May 2020

    Follows the adventures of SpongeBob and Patrick as they travel to the lost city of Atlantic City to save Gary, SpongeBob’s pet snail, who has been snail-napped. As far as new kids’ movies go, this is one of the most bizarre ones this year, which shouldn’t really be a surprise, having in mind it’s Spongebob we’re talking about. Then again, the movie features Keanu Reeves as a wise, talking, underwater plant, which has Keanu’s actual face right in the middle of it...

  11. Artemis Fowl

    Release Date: 28th May 2020

    Based on the hit novel of the same name, Artemis Fowl has seized the attention of book-loving kids all over the world. The upcoming Disney production follows a 12-year-old genius (and descendant of criminal masterminds), Artemis Fowl, in a war against the mighty underground fairies (who may have something to do with his father's disappearance). If the movie lives up to even half the hype of the trailer, it will be a great family movie to see with the kids!

  12. Wonder Woman 1984

    Release date: 5th June 2020

    Wonder Woman 1984 is one of the biggest titles on our list of family films released in 2020. With the first Wonder Woman movie being amongst the most successful DCU films, beating Batman vs Superman and Justice League, we expect great things from the sequel. In this one, the crime-fighting Amazon princess will face off against not just one, but two big villains - Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah. It’s a must-see for any superhero movie fan out there.

    Film Adventure: Want to feel like a superhero yourself? Well, all superheroes have to go through rigorous training, so go and sharpen your skills at the Ninja Warrior UK Adventure.

  13. Soul

    Release date: 19th June 2020

    A Pixar movie called Soul - you already know there won’t be a dry eye in the theatre by the end of this. This is a story of a disillusioned musician who’s lost his passion for music. His soul gets detached from his body and in order to make his way back, he has to help an infant soul learn about herself. Yep, definitely a tear-jerker! We hope this will be the 2020 movie that will succeed Inside Out.

    Film Adventure: If watching this made you feel like you should reconnect with your inner kid, we recommend taking the family to Dalkeith Park. Their outdoor playground, Fort Douglas, welcomes adults too.

  14. Magic Camp

    Release date: 3rd July 2020

    Magic Camp is a new Disney live-action movie, which follows Andy, who returns to the camp where he used to go when he was a kid as a counsellor, in hope to reignite his career. This may not be the most anticipated upcoming movie release of 2020, but with magic, shenanigans and lotf laughs, we expect it to be a good summer film to watch with your tweens.

    Film Adventure: Summer camp is all about outdoor activities, bushcrafts, and having fun in nature. Recreate the feeling at one of these action attractions in the UK!

  15. Minions: The Rise of Gru

    Release date: 10th July 2020

    This the Minions 2 and it’s all you need to know, really. Still in search of a tyrannical leader, the minions are back to their usual shenanigans. Poor Gru! With helpers like these, who needs enemies? As far as plots go, this probably isn’t the strongest, but if your kids loved the noisy, yellow creatures and their mischief last time, they’ll love it this time too.

  16. Jungle Cruise

    Release date: 24th July 2020

    This might be one of our favourite summer family films in 2020! Featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, this Disney production will take you an epic adventure through the jungle with riverboat captain Frank (Dwayne Johnson), Lily Houghton, a scientist search for the magical Tree of Life, and her brother. If facing dangerous wild animals wasn’t enough of a threat already, the trio will have to race against a competing German expedition. It’s a proper old-school adventure-comedy, packed with action from beginning to end.

    Film Adventure: Enjoy your very own jungle adventure with a game of crazy golf at one of Treetop Adventure’s themed courses in Cardiff, Manchester and Leicester.

  17. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway
    Release date: 7th August 2020 (Note: The original release date, 27th March, was pushed back due to Coronavirus) 

    If you thought Peter Rabbit’s adventures at the farm were exciting, wait until you see what trouble he gets into in the big city! The story takes place soon after the events of the first movie. Bea has published her bestselling Peter Rabbit book and this has brought our little hero newfound fame. However, his mischievous reputation causes a rift between him and Thomas, which eventually causes Peter to run away from home and get into even more trouble.

    Film Adventure: If your little ones are Peter Rabbit fans, take then to Willows Activity Farm where you’ll find a Peter Rabbit-themed adventure playground.

  18. The One and Only Ivan

    Release date: 14th August 2020

    Here’s another Disney film to put on your list to watch this summer! “The One and Only Ivan” introduces you to Ivan, a gorilla who doesn’t remember his past. He and his friend, Stella the elephant, come up with a plan to escape captivity and set on search for the missing pieces of his life. As the story unfolds and the mystery begins to unravel, you’ll find yourself getting completely immersed in the adventures of your new animal friends.

  19. The Witches

    Release date: 16th October 2020

    A new (and improved) version of The Witches is set to be released this year. Based on Roald Dahl's 1983 book classic of the same name, the movie tells the story of a seven-year-old boy who runs into trouble with some real witches. Even though the story has a few scary elements, it’s all about a good laugh and lots of imagination. It’s the perfect Halloween family movie!

  20. Raya and the Last Dragon Movie

    Release date: 27th November 2020

    Featuring South Asian themes, this will be an epic fantasy adventure in the realm known as Lumandra, where five clans that make up the Land of the Dragon. Brave warrior Raya sets out to find the last dragon, who happens to be a water dragon named Sisu. Disney shelved “Gigantic” in 2017 in favour of developing this movie, so it must be good!

  21. A Boy Called Christmas

    Release date: 1st December 2020

    If you love a good Christmas movie, then bring the festive feeling to life with “A Boy Called Christmas”. Based on Matt Haig’s book of the same name, the film is about a young boy who goes on an adventure that features snow, elves, kidnapping, and Dame Maggie Smith herself. That’s how you make your Christmas as action-packed as it gets!

    Film Adventure: Go on your own festive adventure with Santa’s Magical Journey at Thursford Collection. It also features snow, elves and plenty of exciting characters.

  22. Tom and Jerry

    Release date: 23rd December 2020

    Initially set to be released on 16th April 2021, this Warner Bros. film is expected to hit UK cinemas 4 months early, in December 2020 - lucky us! This may be a new kids’ film but it builds up on all the classic Tom and Jerry adventures we’ve grown up watching, so parents will enjoy it too. The movie shows the popular cat/mouse frienemies at the very beginning of their relationship. Let’s find out how the rivalry began!

    Film Adventure: If watching Tom and Jerry has made you feel like a kid again, continue your walk down memory lane at the V&A Museum of Childhood.

  23. Rumble (Monster on the Hill)

    Release date: 29th January 2021 (Original release date was 14th August 2020)

    We’ve got two words for you: Monster Wrestling! If your kids are huge WWE fans, this is one upcoming movie release you should follow up closely. The plot revolves around Winnie who wants to follow in his father’s footsteps as a monster wrestling manager. He sets out to transform an inexperienced monster into a true championship contender. This is Paramount’s shot at animation glory in 2020, and to make it even more credible, it’s all in partnership with WWE Studios. Roman Reigns and Becky Lynch are on the voice cast!

    Film Adventure: You probably don’t know how to do a Swan Dive or a Frog Splash but practising some awesome flips and tricks at a trampoline park near you is as close as it gets to flying off the top rope. Rush Trampoline Birmingham is one of our favourite places to practice our stunts.
