paw patrol crew

Quick answer: PAW Patrol follows a group of rescue dogs led by a 10-year-old boy named Ryder. The original six pups are Chase, Marshall, Skye, Rocky, Rubble and Zuma. The team has since grown to include Everest, Tracker, Liberty, Rex and the Mighty Twins, plus a whole Cat Pack of feline allies!

What Is PAW Patrol?

PAW Patrol is a Canadian animated TV show that first aired in 2013 and has become one of the most popular children’s programmes in the world. It follows a team of rescue dogs, each with a speciality inspired by real-world jobs, who live in Adventure Bay and are led by a 10-year-old tech whiz named Ryder.

Each pup lives in a transformable dog house that doubles as a “pupmobile” for missions, and they’re equipped with “pup packs” full of gadgets. The show teaches kids to be brave, helpful and caring, which is probably why parents are just as fond of it as the little ones!

The big idea: No job is too big, no pup is too small.

The Original Six PAW Patrol Pups

These are the pups who started it all! Every child who watches the show will know these six by heart, but here’s a handy cheat sheet for the parents:

Pup Breed Role Catchphrase
Chase German Shepherd Police and spy pup “Chase is on the case!”
Marshall Dalmatian Firefighter and paramedic “I’m fired up!”
Skye Cockapoo Air rescue “This pup’s gotta fly!”
Rocky Mixed breed Eco/recycling pup “Don’t lose it, reuse it!”
Zuma Chocolate Labrador Water rescue “Let’s dive in!”
Rubble English Bulldog Construction “Rubble on the double!”

Chase

The de facto leader of the pups (after Ryder), Chase is a German Shepherd and the team’s police and spy dog. He’s smart, loyal and always ready with a plan. He’s also secretly allergic to cats and feathers, which makes for some very funny moments!

Marshall

A six-year-old Dalmatian and the team’s firefighter and paramedic. Marshall is the clumsy, lovable comedian of the group. He always seems to tumble out of the fire truck at the wrong moment, but when it matters he’s absolutely brilliant. He’s Chase’s best friend and Rocky’s close pal too.

Skye

A tiny Cockapoo with a huge personality, Skye is the team’s air rescue specialist. She pilots her own helicopter and loves nothing more than soaring above Adventure Bay. She’s adventurous, confident and a brilliant role model for young girls!

Rocky

Rocky is a mixed breed pup and the team’s eco-friendly recycling and repair expert. He can fix or build almost anything, but there’s one catch: he absolutely hates getting wet! If there’s a water-based mission, Rocky is not happy about it.

Zuma

A chocolate Labrador and the team’s water rescue specialist, Zuma is energetic, fun and loves the ocean. He’s Rocky’s best friend and the two make a brilliant double act. He pilots a hovercraft for his water missions.

Rubble

An English Bulldog and the team’s construction expert, Rubble operates a bulldozer and excavator. He was the last of the original six to join the team and has a bit of a softer side compared to the others. He loves skateboarding in his spare time!

Newer PAW Patrol Pups

As the show grew in popularity, the team expanded! These pups joined Adventure Bay in later seasons and have become firm favourites with fans:

Everest

A white and grey Husky who joined in Season 3 as the 7th pup. Everest is the snow rescue specialist, based up on Jake’s Mountain. She’s brave, athletic and loves the cold. Her vehicle is a snowcat, and she can ski, snowboard and climb with ease. Catchphrase: “Ice or snow, I’m ready to go!”

Tracker

A Chihuahua and the team’s jungle rescue pup, Tracker joined in Season 4. He drives a jeep equipped with a crane and cables. Impressively, Tracker is bilingual and can speak both English and Spanish! He also has super hearing, picking up the tiniest of sounds. Catchphrase: “I’m all ears!”

Liberty

Liberty is a Dalmatian mix who hails from Adventure City and joins the team in the PAW Patrol movie (2021). She’s street-smart, sassy and brilliant on roller skates! Liberty is one of the most popular newer additions because she brings a totally different energy to the team.

Rex

Rex is a dinosaur-themed pup who drives an armoured vehicle and specialises in dinosaur and large animal rescue. He uses a wheelchair and is a fantastic representation of disability for young viewers. Rex joined the team in Season 8 and has quickly become a favourite.

The Mighty Twins: Tuck and Ella

Tuck and Ella are twin pups who gained superpowers from a meteor! Tuck can shrink, while Ella can fly. They appear in the “Mighty Pups” specials and are a huge hit with children who love the superhero element of the franchise.

The PAW Patrol Movies

PAW Patrol has made the leap to the big screen twice now, and both films are brilliant for a family cinema trip or a cosy night in!

PAW Patrol: The Movie (2021)

The pups head to Adventure City to stop the villainous Mayor Humdinger from taking over as mayor and causing chaos with his dangerous plans. This is where Liberty makes her debut, joining the team and proving herself as a brilliant new member. The film has all the action and heart of the show, just on a much bigger scale!

PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023)

In the second film, the pups gain superpowers after a magical meteor lands in Adventure City. Each pup gets their own unique power, and they have to use them to stop a new villain. The Mighty Movie was released in September 2023 and was a huge hit with families across the UK.

Tip for parents: Both films are rated U in the UK, so they’re perfect for even the youngest PAW Patrol fans!

PAW Patrol Spin-Offs: Rubble & Crew and the Cat Pack

The PAW Patrol universe keeps on growing! Two spin-off series have launched in recent years, giving fans even more characters to love.

Rubble & Crew

Launched in 2023, Rubble & Crew follows Rubble and his family of construction pups as they work to build up the town of Builder Cove. The new characters include:

  • Charger (Rubble’s grandpa, a Great Dane)
  • Motor (an uncle)
  • Wheel (a sister)
  • Tuck (a cousin, not the same Tuck as the Mighty Twin!)
  • Bulldozer (a younger sibling)

It’s a brilliant spin-off for kids who love the construction side of PAW Patrol, and it has the same fun, warm-hearted energy as the original show.

The Cat Pack

The Cat Pack is a team of six cat heroes who sometimes team up with the PAW Patrol pups. The main characters are:

  • Leo (a lion cub who can turn into a giant lion)
  • Rora (a snow leopard who can fly)
  • Shade (a black cat who can become invisible)
  • Midnight (a panther with super speed)
  • Wild (a cheetah)
  • Ryder’s Cat (yes, Ryder has a cat too!)

The Cat Pack adds a whole new dimension to the PAW Patrol world and gives children who prefer cats plenty to get excited about!

Other Key Characters in the PAW Patrol Universe

It’s not just pups! A few human characters are just as important to the story:

  • Ryder is the 10-year-old boy who leads the PAW Patrol. He’s brilliant with technology, brave, and always comes up with the plan.
  • Mayor Goodway is the mayor of Adventure Bay. She’s well-meaning but wonderfully panicky, and she has a pet chicken called Chickaletta who gets into all sorts of trouble.
  • Mayor Humdinger is the villain of the piece, the mayor of Foggy Bottom and Goodway’s rival. He has his own team of mischievous kittens called the Kitten Catastrophe Crew.
  • Cap’n Turbot is a marine biologist and lighthouse keeper who often calls the PAW Patrol for help. His cousin Francois has a thick French accent and a flair for the dramatic!
