What to Expect...
Thousands of pumpkins line a walking trail through Calderglen Country Park for nine days in October, and the session you book changes the character of the whole thing. Standard sessions are walked during golden hour, while sunlight still filters through the trees and the first lanterns begin to glow. After Dark sessions start later, once the festoon lighting strung above the trail is on.
Along the route there is a pumpkin carving station, plus scavenger hunts, inflatables, marshmallow toasting and a live DJ, which makes this closer to an evening out than a quiet woodland stroll. The paths are smooth and wide, and the trail is described as pram and wheelchair friendly.
A third session type is set aside for visitors with additional support needs, running with reduced numbers, softer sound and a slower pace. It is priced the same as a standard session.
Entry is by timed slot and the number of slots each evening is limited, so this is one to sort out before you set off rather than decide on the way. Dogs are welcome as long as they stay on a lead at all times, parking at the country park is free, and babies in arms go free.
Event Highlights
Golden hour or after dark, two different walks
Standard sessions are timed for golden hour, with light still coming through the trees and the first lanterns lit. After Dark sessions begin later, once the festoon lighting above the trail is glowing, and they cost more. Choosing between them is really choosing how much of the walk you want in darkness.
Smooth wide paths for prams and wheelchairs
The trail is laid on smooth, wide paths and is described as pram and wheelchair friendly, which is not a given for a woodland route in October. Dogs can come too, provided they are on a lead the whole way round, and parking at the country park costs nothing.
Carving, inflatables and marshmallows along the route
There is a pumpkin carving station on site, along with scavenger hunts, inflatables, marshmallow toasting and a live DJ. The mix turns a mile of path into a full evening, and gives children something to stop for at intervals rather than asking them simply to keep walking.
