Pumpkin Picking at Spadework

Spadework is a Kent charity that supports adults with learning disabilities through work on its market garden, and the pumpkin patch is one of the things it grows and sells to fund that. That changes the feel of a visit. It is a working garden rather than an events field, and the money goes somewhere.

The practical shape of it is simple and unusually relaxed. Entry is free, there is no booking, and you pay only for the pumpkins you pick. That makes it one of the few patches in the south east you can decide to visit on the morning itself, which is worth knowing when half the county is running timed slots that sold out in September.

The patch is open every day from 5 October through to 31 October, so it covers the whole month rather than a handful of weekends. Because there is no ticketing there is also no pressure on how long you stay or how many people you bring.

Alongside the pumpkins the site runs a garden centre, a plant nursery and a shop, so there is more to do than pick and leave, and the same visit supports the charity's training work.

It is a genuine market garden, so expect uneven ground underfoot and dress for it. If you want a patch with fairground rides, a maze and a food truck village, this is not that. If you want to pick a good pumpkin, pay a fair price for it and have the money do something useful, it is one of the best value trips in Kent.
