What to Expect...
Sandy Bottom Farm sits on Thorn Road at Hedon, on the east side of Hull, and runs a pick your own pumpkin festival every October alongside its summer sunflower season. At £3 a head it is one of the cheapest entry tickets in East Yorkshire, and the farm publishes its pumpkin prices up front rather than making you guess at the till: £1.50 for munchkins, £2 for a 20cm small, £4 for a 26cm medium, £6 for a 35cm large and £8 for extra large.
The standout quirk is the golden ticket. The first 100 tickets bought each season let you re-enter the pumpkin site as many times as you like on any open date. If you live in Hull and expect to come back with different groups of family, that is the ticket to chase when booking opens.
Beyond the patch itself there is a 1.5 acre maze the farm calls the Amaize Maize, pumpkin painting and craft activities, and street food vendors. Lion Learners brings an animal handling experience every Sunday between 11am and 3pm. You can also pick sunflowers and corn on the cob depending on the date.
Two Friday evenings, 9 and 16 October, run as night picking from 5.30pm to 9pm, which is a different proposition from the daytime weekends and a good option if you want the patch without the school holiday crowds.
Be aware of the practical gaps. DOWTK's records for this site are contradictory on facilities: they state there is no parking and no public toilets, while simultaneously listing the farm as wheelchair friendly with accessible toilets. Dogs are not permitted. Given the contradictions, ring the farm before you travel if parking or toilets will make or break your visit.
Event Highlights
The golden ticket
The first 100 tickets sold each season are golden tickets, which let you return to the pumpkin site as many times as you like on any open date. For local families who will come back more than once across October, booking early is worth real money rather than just a better time slot.
The 1.5 acre Amaize Maize
A maize maze cut into an acre and a half beside the pumpkin field. It adds the wandering, getting lost element that turns a fifteen minute pumpkin pick into an actual morning out, and it is a key reason Sandy Bottom draws visitors from across Hull and Holderness.
Friday night picking
On Friday 9 and Friday 16 October the patch opens from 5.30pm to 9pm for evening picking. It is a quieter and more atmospheric alternative to the half term daytime sessions, and it works well for families who cannot get out during the day.
