Pumpkin Picking at Holmeswood Flower Farm

The season here starts in mid-September and runs through to 1 November, a far longer window than most patches offer and one that makes it possible to go well before the October rush. It is a working field rather than a display, and the farm is honest about that: expect mud, and expect to be grateful for your boots.

Some real thought has gone into the practical side. Clean, sturdy wheelbarrows are provided so nobody has to stagger back to the car with an armful, staff are on hand to help clip pumpkins from the vines, and a dedicated washing station means your pumpkins are clean before they go anywhere near the boot. The farm still suggests bringing a bin liner or an old blanket, which tells you something about how muddy it can get.

Pumpkins are priced simply by size, from £2 to £10, and you pay only for what you pick. Entry is a £3 patch pass per person, which you can buy at the gate or book online ahead of a busy weekend, and under twos go free.

Autumn photo backdrops and displays are set up around the patch, there are refreshments and play facilities for children on site, and the farm is dog friendly. The same farm runs pick your own flowers and sweetcorn across the season, and private group bookings can be arranged for larger groups on request.
