Our Arrival & First Impressions
As we arrived at The Tank Museum, we were immediately impressed by how modern and welcoming it felt. Rather than a traditional museum filled with static displays, it had a lively atmosphere with families exploring, interactive exhibits to discover, and enormous tanks that instantly grabbed everyone's attention.
The boys were excited from the moment they walked through the doors, while we were pleasantly surprised by how engaging and accessible everything seemed. It quickly became clear that this was going to be much more than just a collection of military vehicles.
Activities Breakdown
The Tank Museum offers much more than rows of historic vehicles. During our visit we explored interactive exhibits, dressed up in wartime uniforms, walked through the immersive WWI trench experience, watched a live tank demonstration and enjoyed lunch in the museum restaurant. The exhibits are well presented, family friendly and suitable for a wide range of ages. Even family members who were unsure about visiting quickly became engaged with the stories behind the vehicles and the people who operated them. How many people can you get in a battle bus?
We were fascinated to see the museum's Battle Bus in action during the live display. Rather than carrying visitors, it was demonstrated as an example of the armoured vehicles used to transport soldiers safely across the battlefield under enemy fire. Seeing it move across the arena helped us appreciate how important these vehicles were in protecting troops and supporting operations in dangerous conditions.

Mum actually likes tanks!
Elaine went into the museum expecting rows of engines and technical displays, but ended up being the biggest fan of the day. She loved the stories behind the tanks, the immersive exhibits and even braved the rain to watch the live demonstrations. It quickly became clear that The Tank Museum isn't just for military enthusiasts – it's a surprisingly engaging family attraction for everyone.
Food & Drink
We visited the restaurant shortly after arriving and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and choice available. Having travelled from Sandford Holiday Park without breakfast, we opted for the all-day brunch which was warm, filling and exactly what we needed on a cold, wet morning. The restaurant was spacious, clean and family friendly, with plenty of seating and a relaxed atmosphere. Prices felt reasonable for a major attraction, and it provided a welcome break before exploring the exhibits. We also feature our meal stop in our YouTube video from the day.
Money-Saving Tip
We always carry water bottles with us on family days out. The Tank Museum is bigger than you might expect, so having drinks ready means fewer impulse purchases throughout the day.

What We Loved

Could Be Better
Museum shop can feel crowded at busy times The gift shop is excellent and packed with models, books and souvenirs, but during our Bank Holiday visit it became very busy and felt a little cramped. Visiting outside peak periods would probably make browsing more comfortable.
Overall Verdict & Ratings
The museum was spotless, well maintained and felt very safe throughout our visit. Indoor exhibits, outdoor areas and facilities were all kept to a high standard.
More than just static displays, the museum includes immersive exhibits, wartime experiences and impressive live tank demonstrations that keep visitors engaged.
The on-site restaurant exceeded our expectations, serving hearty meals in a comfortable setting. Perfect for warming up on a rainy day.
We visited during a Bank Holiday, so some areas felt busy, particularly the gift shop. However, the museum is spacious enough that it never felt overcrowded overall.
We all enjoyed the day far more than expected. Even family members who weren't interested in tanks found themselves fascinated by the stories and interactive exhibits.
There is plenty to see and do, making it easy to spend a full day here. Considering the quality of the exhibits and live displays, it offers good value for families.

The Tank Museum exceeded all our expectations and turned out to be one of the highlights of our Dorset holiday. It combines history, interactive exhibits, live displays and family-friendly activities in a way that keeps visitors of all ages engaged. We would happily recommend it to families, history enthusiasts and anyone looking for an interesting day out, whatever the weather.
