We were lucky enough to stay right in the heart of Bath, directly opposite Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths, so the excitement started before we had even stepped through the entrance. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the incredible history surrounding us. The Roman Baths are far larger and more impressive than we expected, and seeing the famous Great Bath for the first time was a real wow moment. We were provided with audio guides, which offered plenty of fascinating information, although I personally found it a little tricky trying to listen, look around and take everything in at the same time!
Even so, it didn't take away from what was a truly immersive and memorable first impression.
The Roman Baths offers far more than simply walking around an ancient site. Throughout the attraction, we explored the remains of one of the best-preserved Roman bathhouses in the world, learning about Roman life, religion and engineering along the way. The highlight was undoubtedly seeing the Great Bath itself. Photos simply don’t do it justice, and we found ourselves returning to admire it from different viewpoints throughout our visit.
The included audio guides provided a huge amount of information and helped bring the history to life. There were also interactive exhibits, artefacts and displays that made it easy to understand how the baths were used thousands of years ago. We particularly enjoyed seeing the original Roman stonework and discovering just how much of the site remains intact today.
At the end of the experience, visitors have the opportunity to sample the famous spa water. After spending hours learning about Bath’s natural hot springs, we couldn’t resist giving it a try! Let’s just say it’s definitely an acquired taste and not quite what we were expecting, but it was a fun way to round off the visit and tick another Bath experience off the list.
One small downside for me personally was that I found it a little difficult to listen to the audio guide while also taking in the surroundings and reading some of the information boards. There is so much to see that it can feel slightly overwhelming at times, although that may just be because I didn’t want to miss anything! The attraction was also quite busy during our visit, particularly around the most popular viewing points.
Despite this, we spent over two hours exploring and never felt rushed. Every section revealed something new, and we left feeling we had learned so much while genuinely enjoying ourselves. It struck the perfect balance between education and entertainment, and we were already talking about bringing the children back before we’d even left!

As we didn’t eat or drink at the attraction itself, we can’t comment on the food and drink options available. However, it’s worth noting that hot drinks aren’t permitted inside the museum and Roman Baths. Rob discovered this the hard way when he had to part ways with a rather large Costa coffee before entering – much to his disappointment! 😂
For families looking to save money, it’s well worth checking for discounted tickets before booking. We were fortunate enough to visit using Universal Credit tickets, which were available for just £1 per person at the time of our visit. This made an already fantastic day out incredibly affordable and is definitely something worth looking into if you’re eligible.
The Roman Baths is exceptionally well maintained and clean throughout. Visitors should be aware that some areas feature uneven surfaces and historic stone pathways, so extra care is needed when walking around. The attraction has done a great job of preserving the site’s history, but comfortable footwear is definitely recommended.
While there are no rides, the Roman Baths offers a fascinating and immersive experience. The audio guides, interactive exhibits, artefacts and costumed Roman characters help bring history to life and keep visitors engaged throughout their visit.
We didn’t make use of the food and drink facilities during our visit, so can’t comment on the quality or range available. However, visitors should note that hot drinks are not permitted inside the attraction.
As one of Bath’s most popular attractions, some areas were busy during our visit, particularly around the Great Bath and key viewing points. Despite this, visitor flow was well managed and we never felt rushed.
The Roman Baths exceeded our expectations. From seeing the Great Bath for the first time to watching the Sacred Spring bubble away beneath the city, there were plenty of memorable moments. The opportunity to sample the famous spa water at the end added a fun and unique finishing touch.
We felt the Roman Baths offered excellent value for money, especially considering how much there is to see and learn. We spent over two hours exploring and could easily have stayed longer. The availability of discounted Universal Credit tickets for £1 per person made the experience even better value and opened up access to an iconic attraction that might otherwise be out of reach for some families.
The Roman Baths completely exceeded our expectations. What started as a child-free day out during a weekend in Bath quickly became one of the highlights of our trip. From the breathtaking Great Bath and fascinating Roman history to the interactive exhibits and unique opportunity to taste the famous spa water, there was so much to enjoy. Despite a few busy areas and the occasional information overload, the experience was immersive, educational and genuinely memorable. We would absolutely recommend the Roman Baths to friends and family and are already looking forward to returning with the children!
