Taking in over 2,000 years of history at the Roman Baths. An incredible experience that had us wishing the children were there to see it too.

Our Arrival & First Impressions

Standing between two of Bath's most iconic landmarks – the Roman Baths and the stunning Bath Abbey. A picture-perfect moment from a truly memorable weekend.

We were lucky enough to stay right in the heart of Bath, directly opposite Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths, so the excitement started before we had even stepped through the entrance. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the incredible history surrounding us. The Roman Baths are far larger and more impressive than we expected, and seeing the famous Great Bath for the first time was a real wow moment. We were provided with audio guides, which offered plenty of fascinating information, although I personally found it a little tricky trying to listen, look around and take everything in at the same time!

Even so, it didn't take away from what was a truly immersive and memorable first impression.

Activities Breakdown

The Roman Baths offers far more than simply walking around an ancient site. Throughout the attraction, we explored the remains of one of the best-preserved Roman bathhouses in the world, learning about Roman life, religion and engineering along the way. The highlight was undoubtedly seeing the Great Bath itself. Photos simply don’t do it justice, and we found ourselves returning to admire it from different viewpoints throughout our visit.

The included audio guides provided a huge amount of information and helped bring the history to life. There were also interactive exhibits, artefacts and displays that made it easy to understand how the baths were used thousands of years ago. We particularly enjoyed seeing the original Roman stonework and discovering just how much of the site remains intact today.

At the end of the experience, visitors have the opportunity to sample the famous spa water. After spending hours learning about Bath’s natural hot springs, we couldn’t resist giving it a try! Let’s just say it’s definitely an acquired taste and not quite what we were expecting, but it was a fun way to round off the visit and tick another Bath experience off the list.

One small downside for me personally was that I found it a little difficult to listen to the audio guide while also taking in the surroundings and reading some of the information boards. There is so much to see that it can feel slightly overwhelming at times, although that may just be because I didn’t want to miss anything! The attraction was also quite busy during our visit, particularly around the most popular viewing points.

Despite this, we spent over two hours exploring and never felt rushed. Every section revealed something new, and we left feeling we had learned so much while genuinely enjoying ourselves. It struck the perfect balance between education and entertainment, and we were already talking about bringing the children back before we’d even left!

  1. 1

Seeing the Great Bath and Sacred Spring for the First Time

Nothing prepares you for that first view of the Great Bath. It’s an incredible sight and easily the standout moment of the visit. We were also fascinated by the Sacred Spring, where you can see the natural hot spring water bubbling up from deep underground. Feeling the warmth rising from the water and watching the bubbles appear made it much easier to appreciate why the Romans considered this place so special nearly 2,000 years ago.

    Bringing Roman History To Life

The Roman Baths does an excellent job of making history feel engaging rather than overwhelming. Alongside the artefacts, exhibits and original Roman ruins, we were lucky enough to meet costumed Roman characters who were on hand to chat with visitors and answer questions. It was a fun and interactive way to learn more about daily life in Roman Britain and helped bring the site to life. Combined with the fascinating stories, preserved stonework and interactive displays, it felt like stepping back nearly 2,000 years in time.
Meeting one of the Roman characters was a fun surprise and a great way to learn more about life in Roman Britain. These interactive encounters helped bring history to life for visitors of all ages.

    Tasting The Famous Bath Water

A fun and unique way to end the experience! We couldn’t leave without trying the mineral-rich spa water – although it’s definitely an acquired taste!
Watching the natural spring water make its way through the Roman Baths. It’s incredible to think this same water has been flowing here for thousands of years and can still be sampled by visitors today.

Food & Drink

As we didn’t eat or drink at the attraction itself, we can’t comment on the food and drink options available. However, it’s worth noting that hot drinks aren’t permitted inside the museum and Roman Baths. Rob discovered this the hard way when he had to part ways with a rather large Costa coffee before entering – much to his disappointment! 😂

Money-Saving Tip

For families looking to save money, it’s well worth checking for discounted tickets before booking. We were fortunate enough to visit using Universal Credit tickets, which were available for just £1 per person at the time of our visit. This made an already fantastic day out incredibly affordable and is definitely something worth looking into if you’re eligible.
